Day 2: Vatican Museums

Breakfast at hotel. Enjoy a free morning in Rome: you could explore Ancient Rome with the Coliseum and Roman Forum, or go to the Trastevere District and admire the beauty and charm of typical Roman everyday life and relax in a typical café with a cappuccino or a gelato. Alternatively, take an optional Half-Day Tour to Pisa. After an independent lunch, you’ll be visiting the Vatican with Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel, the official residence of the Pope in Vatican City. Its fame rests on its architecture, which evokes Solomon’s Temple of the Old Testament. Its decoration is by the greatest artists of the Renaissance, including Michelangelo whose ceiling is legendary. Your tour of the Vatican & Sistine Chapel continues in the vast open spaces of St. Peters Basilica, where you will discover Bernini’s breathtaking Papal Canopy, and Michelangelo’s stunning Pietà, as well as being entertained by anecdotes about the extravagant lifestyles of the Popes during the Renaissance, and the tale of a simple fisherman who became the first Pope of Christianity.

Your local guide will show you some of the treasures and mosaics inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, built in 356 after the miracle snowfall, which is commemorated every August 5th with a special ceremony. Continuing on tour you will see and the Lateran Palace before visiting the inside of the Holy Staircase steps, which according to tradition, Jesus climbed in Pontius Pilatus’ residence and then these steps were moved to the Basilica of San Giovanni. Continue to the Cathedral of Rome and the first church ever built in Rome. To end the basilicas tour you will arrive at St. Paul outside the walls Basilica. Built on Saint Paul’s Tomb, it is the second largest basilica in Rome with its medieval mosaics and its wonderful porticoes. Independent lunch then continue your guided tour of Christian Rome with a visit to San Callisto’s Catacombs, 300 km of tunnels carved out of the soft tufa rock.
